New England Native Perennial Plant Seeds For Sale

I apologize for not writing recently, but I just got a brand new knee, to help serve you better!

I have also been busy updating my website and collecting native plant seeds from a number of gardens in which I work. Some of the early seeds were gathered much earlier in the year, and some of the late season seeds won’t be ready to collect for several more weeks.

To that end, I am offering seed packs of some of the sexier and more interesting native perennials. You will find that these plants flower for long periods, and bring in a multitude of important pollinators. Recent years have revealed a significant evolution in the plants that people are planting, and native plants are at the core of this change.

Go the my Seeds Page to see what I have to offer.

The next couple of months are the best time to sow these seeds, as they need the cold Winter to stratify and then germinate in the Spring. You can add these to existing garden beds or create new beds by removing lawn areas. You have plenty of time to create these new spaces and sow the seeds later in the year. The key with sowing seeds is to place them on soil that has been scratched a little to allow for good contact and that they don’t get buried too deeply. So while in future years, you may leave the plants in place over the Winter and leave the leaves, for good germination, it is best to have spaces cleared of material with exposed soil.

Seeds are an easy and cost effective way to start with native plants, and many of them will even flower in their first year from seed, but will take a few seasons to get to mature size.  Interestingly, many native plants are relatively short-lived, so it is important to let them go to seed to create future generations of plants. This often leads native gardens to shift and evolve, unlike our more typical non-native gardens that look the same year after year. However, you may find some plants reseed so easily and you might want to cut off flower heads before they go to seed.  Native plant maintenance is a different animal from our more traditional gardens.

I am more than happy to help consult with you on how to start with native plants. You will be amazed by their beauty and the new life that will come to your garden with insects, bees, butterflies, moths, hummingbirds, birds and much more.

Take a chance and try something new, or add to your already growing native garden!

My first career was in Advertising in NYC, but after moving to San Francisco 25 years ago, I made a life-altering change and went back to school for Ornamental Horticulture. Over the years in San Francisco and Boston I have worked in multiple nurseries, had my own design, installation and maintenance businesses on both coasts, managed a 30 acre historic private estate in Brookline, and managed one of the top fine-gardening companies in New England. I was for years a Massachusetts Certified Horticulturist(MCH). Most recently, design and consulting work has led me to focus my passion on working individually with people and showing them how to make their gardens and landscapes beautiful through inspiration and proper care. My experience allows me to advise on any aspect of the landscape from trees to stonework to perennial borders to lighting and irrigation. While there is much I do not know, I have a network of experts who can help with any topic. I find that few things in life are more humbling than tending to the living organism of a garden.
